The area of mountainous Karabakh saw the most destructive fighting in the whole Caucasus. It is also a region of outstanding natural beauty.

The war resulted in some 600,000 refugees, and due to the political nature of the displacement, very few aid agencies work there.

The children living in and around Stepankert, the capital, have little contact with the outside world, save from the visiting diaspora Armenians.

'Children of the Caucasus' was one of the first outside organisations to show interest in the creative, positive side of their lives. We worked alongside MSF Belgium with children from the Children's Psychological Centre and in the school in Shusha, the former capital, now mostly destroyed.
